Five Toronto cafes and restaurants earned formal approval this month from members of the Registered Dietitians of Ontario for menus that meet specific criteria on protein, fiber and vegetable portions.
The approvals arrive as residents increase focus on daily nutrition to support routines along the 56-kilometre waterfront trail and High Park trails, where winter fitness groups already draw thousands each weekend.
Leaf & Ladle on Dundas Street West in Kensington Market offers a $14 quinoa and lentil bowl that dietitians noted contains 22 grams of plant protein and three servings of vegetables. The cafe sources greens from nearby Ontario greenhouses and posts full nutritional breakdowns on its menu boards. Vitality Kitchen in the Annex near Bloor Street West received similar clearance for its $13 grilled salmon salad, which includes measured portions of avocado and roasted beets to hit daily potassium targets.
Both locations operate within the city’s multicultural wellness network and participate in Toronto Public Health’s 2025 healthy restaurant pilot that requires transparent sourcing labels.
A May 2026 City of Toronto nutrition audit of 120 eateries found that approved venues recorded an average 18 percent increase in repeat visits compared with standard cafes. Prices at the cleared spots range from $11 to $16 for full meals, with many items under 550 calories while delivering at least 15 grams of fiber.
City data also showed that 37 percent of trail users now stop at one of these approved spots at least once a week.
Anyone interested can review the full list on the Registered Dietitians of Ontario website or visit the locations during weekday lunch service when nutrition cards are available at the counter.
