Toronto Cleantech Roadmap Reveals New Waste and Remediation Tools From Startups

Toronto's climate-tech sector is positioning itself for the next set of green products through existing support programs and a top-ranked ecosystem. The city houses over 24,000 tech firms and targets net-zero emissions by 2040 under its TransformTO initiative. The Green Market Acceleration Program, launched by the City of Toronto, lets cleantech startups test innovations on city infrastructure and resources.

Local programs drive product testing

The Green Market Acceleration Program gives startups direct access to municipal assets for real-world trials. This setup supports development of tools in areas such as zero-waste food systems, mining-tailings cleanup and automated reforestation. Toronto-Waterloo ranks as Canada's leading CleanTech ecosystem, placing sixth in North America and 12th globally, with $2.3 billion in early-stage funding recorded and a $25.6 billion contribution to GDP.

Named local firms already linked to these efforts include Inwit, which operates Toronto's first Zero Waste Food App, BacTech, focused on toxic mining tailings remediation, and Flash Forest, which advances reforestation automation. These companies illustrate the types of products that could scale once testing phases conclude.

Employment trends support continued growth

Green-sector employment in the city expanded at a 3.9 percent annual average between 2015 and 2019, nearly double the pace of all industries combined. Resource Management grew at 4.5 percent annually and Sustainable Transportation at 4.9 percent during the same period. These figures indicate sustained capacity for product development in the years ahead.

City officials continue to route cleantech firms through the Green Market Acceleration Program for validation steps. The combination of ranked funding levels, named startup activity and municipal testing resources sets the conditions for further product releases without requiring new external events.
